Membership has always been an important aspect of involvement at Grace Church. With our next Foundations* membership class coming up in a few weeks, we thought it would be a good idea to take a moment to answer the “WHY?” questions related to church membership. From the inception of the church, the doctrine of membership has been a prominent and often controversial issue. Depending on custom and tradition, the expression of membership may take a variety of different forms. Today a number of different modern church movements are rejecting the idea of church membership all together by stating that it is a human idea and an unnecessary addition to the Christian faith.
At Grace Church, we are fully aware that our members, regular attendees, and guests are coming from many of the various traditions mentioned above and have strong opinions regarding the doctrine of church membership. As a church we believe this is an important issue and one that needs to be addressed carefully and thoroughly. Through careful research and study, we seek to address the major issues regarding church membership and answer them under the heading of the questions below:
· Why do so many people struggle over the issue of membership?
· Why should Christians join a local church?
· What exactly is church membership at Grace Church?
